Did you know you could massage and relax your whole body just by massaging your ears?

The ears are a microcosm of the whole body. They encompass reflexology points that correlate to different channels that run to different organs and body parts. Another important aspect about the ears, is that they have a direct connection to a very important nerve called the Vagus nerve. The Vagus nerve is a long nerve that runs from the brain stem to the abdomen, and it plays a vital role in regulating many bodily functions, including digestion, heart rate, and breathing. It is plays a key role in activating the parasympathetic response in the body. Which is a state of relaxation and calm. Therefore, taking a moment to massage the ears can help put the body into a state of relaxation and release tension in the body.

How do I massage my ears?

  • Get into a comfortable seated position

  • Place your fingers behind your ears and your thumbs on the front of your ears

  • Begin gently pressing and slowly moving your thumbs in circular motions up and down the ears

  • Take your time, notice if there is any areas that feel sensitive and compare to the chart above

  • Next, gently pull your ears away from your head, moving up and down the ears

  • Then place your palms gently over your ears and move in circular motions clockwise and counterclockwise slowly

Massaging the ears is a beneficial practice to include in your self-care regimen. It does not, however, substitute medical care. Always speak with your primary care provider if you believe you have a serious medical condition.
